Remember the song Hair?
Give me a head with hair, long beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen
Give me down to there, hair, shoulder length or longer
Here baby, there, momma, everywhere, daddy, daddyHair, flow it, show it
Long as God can grow, my hair
We all want good hair, it's in our blood, that's why they make songs about it.
It's the crown to our face, the mane behind our roar, the identity to our gender.
For years it was the bain of my existence, until that glorious day I decided to do the unthinkable (well to all states minus Texas and those below the mason dixie line)...a pageant.
The best hair and beauty skills came out of the decision. As the years have gone by, I've learned to manage my mane in styles that are current to me, using those "big hair for days" skills. No shame in my hair game.
Now keep in mind all hair is not the same and all products are not the same so your hair may vary depending on texture, climate and products you use.
Today I'm going to show you my version of the "victoria secret voluminous" hair. (next time I'll show you my beachy waves for you beachy babes which happens to be my everyday look.)
This was the finished product from freshly washed clean hair. After washing hair I put Kevin Murphy Mousse ( you can get all the Kevin Murphy goods at Do or Dye Salon Houston, Tx ...tell Brandi, Grace, Lindsay, Ginny, Ashley that I said hi and i love them) on the roots and let my hair air dry until its almost damp. I then flipped my hair over and blow-dried the roots. Drying upside down allows the hair to dry in the opposite direction from which it would normally lay, adding volume. You're welcome.
After hair prep, I proceeded with steps below.
the curlers.
Bringing back the old school rollers. yeah buddy! These bad boys use to be my grandmothers'. it was part of my inheritance.
It's important to find curlers with the soft velvet wrapped around the curler; I find that it works best to keep the curls smooth and tight.
- First you want to section off your hair into three parts.
- Start with the top section aka "the mohawk", clip that up.
- Then split the remainder of the hair down the middle at the back of your head.
- Clip those separately.
- Next grab a large roller. (you want the top part of hair to be more voluptuous than shirley temple curls so that's why I use the large curler)
- Grab a 1' in section of hair from the mohawk and pull it up at slight angle from the top of your head.
- Now is the time to mist a little hairspray before you roll.
- Begin to roll hair over curler keeping it nice and snug.
- Repeat steps until you have 4 to 5 solid rolls on the top of your head.
This is the only tricky part.
- Next you want to grab a section of your hair that is near the top of head next to the profile of face.
- This section you want to pull up and in the direction of the opposite side of head.
- Again as you roll hair onto curler make sure its nice and tight and fairly smooth.
- Now you're going to grab the medium rollers for this section of hair curling.
- You are going to take 1' in sections of hair, starting from the hairline next to your face, rolling the hair onto curler away from your face, toward the back of your head.
- The goal is to repeat steps until it hits the at split in the back of your head.
- Your hair should not be rolling on top of the curlers but rather on the side making the curler lay perpendicular to the top of your head.
- You should only be grabbing the hair from the middle section of your head [think of your head in thirds. Top (crown), Middle, and Bottom (Nape, hair falling below bottom lip.)] leaving out the hair at the nape of your neck.
- Repeat these steps on the opposite side. Remember to curl away from your face.
- Your rollers should be going in one direction on one side and another direction on the other. On both sides you are curling away from the face toward the back of head. This is important whenever you curl your hair no matter what style...in my opinion.
If your hair is long I recommend first wrapping hair once midway down the section. Then wrap hair until the tip of hair is rolled around curler and then roll the remainder of hair up till it hits your scalp. Keep curls perpendicular to crown.
what am i suppose to do with all of this?
So you have left over hair...now what?!
almost done.
- Depending on what curlers you have left you will then roll the nape of your neck hair in the same pattern as you did before. ( I would use the medium rollers if available, if not the smallest ones)
- Again gather 1 inch sections of hair rolling hair onto curler towards the back of head.
- Repeat on other side.
own it, love it, cover it.
Lightly mist your whole entire head (in my case big ole noggin) with an extra hold hairspray. (again I love me some Kevin Murphy)
- You can be brave and spray real fast.
- You can hold your breath.
- You can cover your face.
All will work as long as you spray in the direction of your head.
stop and let the curlers do their thang.
Here is the perfect time to get your mug in order. I cheated and did my makeup beforehand so i wouldn't look like a total hag taking all these pictures.
- You want to have rollers set for at least 10 minutes until they are cool before removing.
- For added volume, you can transfer each roll onto velcro rollers misting again with hairspray letting that set for another 10 minutes. This will make larger waves and smoother curls.
Hair magic is about to happen...GET EXCITED!!!
- Now that the rollers have cooled you can start with the unveiling of the mane.
- I suggest starting from the bottom moving towards the top of head so hair doesn't get tangled.
- Keep hands away from your hair until its all out of curlers. The oil from your hands will weigh down hair and you will not get the volume you are looking for, so step back from the urge.
- When curlers are out hair should look somewhat like this.
- Looser curls on top, tighter curls underneath.
the flip and shake.
- Flip your hair over and shake it at the scalp.
- Think head message gone nuts.
- When you have given a good shake down lightly mist again with hairspray.
Now bring on the snap back...
OK. This is a perfect action shot that really shows my need to get my roots done. Next personal step is to call my boo Brittany to get my hair did. Message me for her number, she's fabulous.
Now that you flipped right side up select your style.
Here is where I would finger comb hair to the style I'm in the mood for or that works with my outfit.
We're girls we like a variety package...am I right?!
- You got the 80's flip. An exaggerated part to one side creating high volume. My personal favorite, my ex's, not so much. (its probably why it didn't work, hair is kind of a big deal :)
- Then you have the good ole middle part.
- The crown pulled back poof. (great if hair is dirty because hair naturally separates, just add some dry shampoo or baby powder to take away the obvious extra oil.)
- The classic side part, make sure you part slightly more than usual. Your hair can be sneaky and remember where you last parted it. If you add a little more hair it will add volume.
I'm from Texas we love our tease combs.
- If your hair is not close enough to the heavenly you desire, bust out a closely lined comb for some teasing action.
- Lift 1' in sections from mohawks area and begin to back tease.
- Comb down hair an inch form scalp stacking combed hair on top of each other.
- Repeat steps until you get the extra volume you desire or until your arm falls off. Beauty is pain right?
- Lightly comb over ratted hair to create a smooth finished look.
Clean hair or dirty hair you can still have volume. Pictured above is freshly washed hair slightly different than the ones posted throughout blog. Both work. With the clean hair curls I can create an old hollywood hairdo by smoothing out curls with a bristle brush, shaping with my fingers and spraying with hairspray.
Ladies as many pictures and steps I've listed, this is truly a simple styling option. Don't get overwhelmed, just practice. I started the "Texas Tease" at 19, I'm (cough, cough) 33, I've had some practice.
Grab a mirror, a glass of wine, some great tunes and have fun.
FYI this is not my everyday hair I'm not that high maintenance. My everyday look is my beach wave hair, low maintenance and last for days. I'll demo that hair at a later date, one step at a time.
So now it's time for you to...
rock that hair of yours. think, "big hair don't care"!
